Demi Permanent Hair Color: 14 Shades and the One Rule

Demi permanent hair color is a dye mixed with a low-strength developer that pushes color just under the hair cuticle, lasts roughly 24 to 28 shampoos, and fades out instead of growing out. It can make your hair darker, richer, shinier or a different tone, but it cannot make it lighter.
That last part is the whole decision. If the shade you want is the same depth as your hair or deeper, demi is usually the smartest dye you can buy. If you want to go lighter, no demi formula on any shelf will get you there, and this guide will save you the box.
What is demi permanent hair color?
Demi permanent color sits between semi permanent and permanent dye. It is mixed with a gentle developer (usually 5 to 10 volume, so 1.5% to 3% hydrogen peroxide) and is either ammonia-free or very low in ammonia. That opens the cuticle just enough for color to settle into the outer layers of the strand without lifting your natural pigment.

What you get in practice:
- Depth and richness. Brown goes to deeper brown, faded red goes back to red.
- Tone change. Brassy blonde goes beige, orange brown goes neutral.
- Shine. The finish is glossier than most permanent dye, which is why salons sell it as a "gloss" or "glaze".
- A soft exit. It fades gradually, so there is no hard root line when your hair grows.
What you do not get: lift. Wella describes its demi lines as "zero lift" formulas in its guide to demi-permanent color, and that is true across brands.
Demi vs semi vs permanent hair color
The three categories differ in one thing: how far the color gets into the hair. Everything else (how long it lasts, whether it lightens, how it grows out) follows from that.
| Semi permanent | Demi permanent | Permanent | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Developer | None | Low, 5 to 10 volume | 20 volume or stronger |
| Ammonia | None | None or very low | Yes |
| Can it lighten? | No | No | Yes, a few levels |
| Lasts | Roughly 6 to 12 shampoos | Roughly 24 to 28 shampoos | Until it grows out or is cut |
| Gray coverage | Stains, barely blends | Blends, up to about 70% with some formulas | Full coverage |
| Exit | Washes out | Fades softly, no root line | Grows out with a root line |
| Best for | Bright fashion shades on light hair | Deepening, toning, gloss, early grays | Going lighter, full gray coverage |
If you have read our Splat hair dye guide, that is the semi permanent end of this table: bright, fun, and gone in weeks.
The one rule: same shade or darker
Every demi decision comes back to one question. Is the color you want at the same level as your hair or darker?
- Yes: demi is the right tool. It is gentler than permanent dye and easier to undo.
- Darker by a lot: demi works, but expect it to fade lighter than day one within a few weeks.
- Lighter: stop. You need bleach or a high-lift permanent color first. Demi can then tone the result, which is exactly how most salon blondes are finished.
This is why the most common demi complaint is "it did nothing". Someone with dark brown hair buys a light golden brown box, and it shifts the tone a little and leaves the depth exactly where it was.

Everything in this set is held constant except the shade: the same shoulder-length layered cut, the same middle part, the same smooth blow-dry. That makes it easy to see what the color alone does. Most of these are classic demi territory, deep browns, reds and coppers on natural hair, while the blondes are what demi does as a toner over hair that was lightened first.

Demi suits most hair, but what it does for you depends on what you start with. Find your row, then read the section below it.
| Your hair | What demi does | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Fine or thin | Adds shine and a little body | Great choice |
| Blonde, bleached or highlighted | Tones out brass, adds gloss | Great choice, as a toner |
| Dark brown, want red or richer brown | Deepens and adds a red or violet tint | Great choice |
| Curly or coily | Color and shine with less dryness | Good choice |
| First grays, under about half | Blends them into a soft tone | Good choice |
| Mostly gray, want full coverage | Fades on gray within weeks | Use permanent instead |
| Dark, want to go lighter | Nothing visible | Wrong product |
Fine or thin hair
Fine hair is where demi earns its keep. Permanent dye can leave fine strands dry and flat, while a demi gloss smooths the cuticle and reflects more light, so the hair reads thicker. Go for a shade within one level of your own.

Blonde, bleached or highlighted hair
For blondes, demi is not a color change, it is the finishing step. Bleach leaves a yellow or orange base, and a demi toner (often violet or blue based) neutralizes it into beige, ash or champagne. If you are lifting at home, our bleached hair guide covers the part before the toner. Demi is also what keeps brown hair with blonde highlights from turning brassy between appointments.

Dark brown hair that wants red
This is the most satisfying demi job there is. Dark brown hair already has the depth, so a red or violet demi like cherry cola sits on top and glows in the light, with no bleach involved. The catch is that red molecules are the first to leave, so expect to refresh every four to six weeks.

Curly and coily hair
Coily and curly hair is drier by nature, so a low-peroxide, ammonia-free dye is the kinder way to add color. Demi gives deep tones like burgundy, plum or espresso without the dryness that permanent color can bring. If your coils are type 4, pair it with the moisture routine in our 4C hair guide.

First grays
Demi does not cover gray, it blends it. Gray strands come out a lighter, translucent version of the shade, which looks like natural highlights rather than paint. Wella rates its strongest demi formula at up to 70% gray coverage. Past that, or if you want gray fully gone, use permanent color. If you are thinking about the opposite move, our gray hair transition guide covers going natural.
How long does demi permanent hair color last?
Demi permanent color lasts about 24 to 28 shampoos, which is four to six weeks for most people washing every other day. Reds and coppers fade fastest, browns and blacks hold longest.
Porous hair, such as bleached or damaged hair, grabs the color faster and can also release it faster, so the same box gives different results on different heads. Three things stretch it:
- Wash less. Every shampoo takes some color.
- Use cooler water. Hot water opens the cuticle.
- Use sulfate-free shampoo. Clarifying and sulfate shampoos strip demi fast.
Does demi permanent hair color damage hair?
Demi is one of the gentlest dyes you can use, but it is not zero impact. It still uses peroxide, so it is still a chemical process. The real cons are these:
- It cannot lighten. By far the biggest one.
- It fades. You are signing up for a refresh every month or two.
- It may not wash out completely. On porous or bleached hair, a faint stain can stay until it is cut.
- Patch test still applies. Most demi formulas contain the same dye ingredients that cause allergic reactions in permanent dye.
Mistakes that cost you the shade
- Picking from the box photo. The model on the box started with light hair. Check the shade on a swatch chart against your own level instead.
- Going too dark "because it fades". It fades lighter, not away. A shade two levels too dark is still too dark in week three.
- Using it to cover heavy gray. You get stained gray and a refresh every three weeks.
- Leaving it on longer for more color. Demi reaches its result in the stated time. Longer just means more peroxide exposure.
- Skipping the strand test. Ten minutes on a hidden section tells you more than any review.
How to apply demi permanent hair color at home
How to apply demi permanent hair color at home
- Patch test two days before
Dab a little mixed color behind your ear and wait 48 hours. Any itching, redness or swelling means do not use it.
- Strand test the shade
Color a small hidden section underneath and rinse it. This shows the real result on your hair, which is rarely the box photo.
- Start with clean, dry hair
Wash a day before without heavy conditioner, so the color has a clean surface to grab.
- Mix and apply evenly
Mix the color with its developer exactly as the instructions say. Apply from roots to ends in small sections, then comb through so nothing is patchy.
- Time it, then rinse cool
Process for the stated time, usually around 20 minutes. Rinse with cool water until it runs clear and finish with conditioner.
Going to a salon instead? Ask for it in one line:
Say this to your barber
I want a demi permanent gloss, no lift, the same level as my natural color or one level darker, with a cool, neutral or warm tone.
Can you see the shade on yourself first?
Yes, and you should, because the strand test only answers half the question. It tells you what the color does to your hair. It does not tell you whether that color suits your face.
The free way is decent: hold your hair against a swatch book in daylight, check your undertone with our skin undertone test, and take the hair color quiz for a shortlist. Then you hit the wall. A swatch is a strand of hair on a card, not your face, your skin and your eyes under that shade.
That is the gap our virtual hair color try-on fills. Upload a selfie and you see the shade on your own face before you mix anything. The first look is free with no card, and plans start at $9 a month if you want to compare every color.
Demi permanent hair color is the best dye for most people who are going the same depth or darker: it is gentle, glossy, forgiving and leaves no root line. Use it to deepen brown, add red to dark hair, tone blonde or blend early grays. Do not use it to go lighter or to hide heavy gray, because it simply cannot do either. Pick the shade with your face in mind, not the box, and it is the lowest-risk color change you can make.
Frequently asked questions
Semi permanent color has no developer and only coats the outside of the hair, so it lasts around 6 to 12 shampoos. Demi permanent color uses a low-strength developer that lets the color settle just inside the cuticle, so it lasts about 24 to 28 shampoos and blends gray better.
For natural-looking color, deepening, toning and early grays, demi is better because it lasts longer and fades more evenly. For bright fashion shades like blue or pink on pre-lightened hair, semi permanent is the usual choice.
It cannot lighten hair, it fades within four to six weeks, it only blends gray rather than covering it, and it may leave a faint stain on porous or bleached hair. It also still needs a patch test.
Usually mostly, but not always completely. On healthy hair it fades gradually over 24 to 28 shampoos. On bleached or porous hair a faint tint can stay until those ends are cut.
Dish soap strips color faster than shampoo, but it will not remove demi in one wash and it is very drying. A clarifying shampoo over a few washes fades it more gently.
It blends gray rather than covering it. Gray strands come out a lighter, softer version of the shade. Some professional demi formulas reach up to about 70% coverage. For full coverage use permanent color.
Yes. Permanent color uses a stronger developer and ammonia, can lighten your natural color and grows out with a root line. Demi uses a weak developer, cannot lighten and fades out over about a month.
Yes, brown is one of the most popular demi categories, from espresso and chestnut to ash and mushroom brown. It works best when the brown you choose is the same level as your hair or darker.
