A men's perm winds your hair onto a rod, breaks the bonds that hold it straight, then locks it into a new shape. It holds for three to six months, it grows out instead of washing out, and published US salon price indexes put men's perms in the $50 to $200 range depending on hair length and technique. In 2026 the default is a loose wave, not the tight curl your dad got in 1987.

Here is what the style menus hide. You are not choosing between a Korean perm, a body wave and a loose perm. Those are three names for three rod diameters. The rod is the entire decision, and the second half of it is the haircut underneath, because a perm exaggerates whatever shape the cut already has. A mediocre cut permed is a worse cut, permanently, for four months.

The real choice is rod size, not the perm name

Curl diameter comes out roughly the diameter of the rod your hair was wound onto. That is the whole mechanism. A "Korean perm" and a "body wave" can leave the same chair on the same rod, and the price gap is branding plus, sometimes, heat.

Ten perm styles for men, and who each one suits

These are sorted loosely from the widest curl to the tightest. If this is your first perm, start at the top of the list and work down next time. Nobody has ever regretted going too loose.

Loose wave perm

One inch rods on three to four inches of hair. You get long open bends that read as "he woke up like this" rather than "he got a perm", which is exactly why it is the most requested men's perm right now. It needs length to show: under three inches on top the wave has nowhere to travel and just looks fluffy. Pair it with a taper rather than a skin fade so the curl has somewhere to land.

Body wave perm

Three quarter inch rods, wound root to tip, so the wave is even all the way down instead of concentrated at the ends. This is the fix for hair that is thick enough but falls flat by lunchtime. It adds volume without adding a visible curl pattern, so it is the least obvious perm on this list and the easiest to explain to a conservative workplace.

Korean perm

Large heated rods and a softer solution, usually finished into a middle part or a curtain fringe. The point is not tighter curl, it is a relaxed S bend that holds on coarse straight hair which a cold perm cannot grip. If your hair is thick, straight and heavy and every perm you have seen dropped out in a month, this is the one that does not.

Digital perm with a curtain fringe

Same heated technique, but the curl is loaded into the ends and the roots are left straight. The fringe then sweeps outward in two arcs away from the center of the forehead and stays there without a round brush every morning. This is the highest-leverage version for anyone who currently spends ten minutes blow-drying a curtain fringe into place.

Tight spiral perm

Quarter inch rods, small defined corkscrews. Be honest about the upkeep before you book this: tight curl on short hair grows out fastest and looks most obviously chemical at the two month mark, when the root is straight and the ends are still springing. It suits a strong jaw and a confident haircut and almost nothing else.

Textured perm on a crop

Half inch rods on about two inches of hair, worn forward into a short blunt fringe. This is the quiet version of the perm and the one most barbers actually recommend to first-timers. The curl is doing one job, adding separation and movement to a crop that would otherwise sit dead flat, and you can cut it out in two haircuts if you hate it.

Permed modern mullet

Short permed curl through the top and sides, clearly longer permed curl at the back over the collar. The perm is what makes a mullet read as deliberate rather than neglected, because curl at the nape holds a shape instead of hanging in a flat sheet. It is the highest commitment cut here. Get the disconnection wrong and it is a bad haircut you live with for months.

Middle part perm

Hair split down the center and permed into loose waves that fall symmetrically to about cheekbone level. The part does the framing and the curl stops the two halves looking like flat curtains. Works on medium length hair from about four inches, and it is unforgiving of an uneven hairline because a center part shows you both sides at once. Spot perm

Curl at the crown only. The sides and the hair around the ears stay straight. If your problem is that the top of your head goes flat and the rest of your hair is fine, this is the cheapest and least damaging thing on the list, because you are only processing the section that needs it. Ask for it by name, since most shops will not offer it.

Wavy perm with a low taper fade

Loose open wave up top, short clean taper starting low around the ear and the nape. This is the combination that dominates men's perm photos in 2026, and the reason is the contrast: the tight, flat sides make the curl on top look intentional rather than overgrown. Get the low taper cut before the perm, not after.

A perm does not wash out, it grows out. That means the clock you actually care about is not "how long does the curl last", it is "how long until the straight root is obvious", and on a half inch of monthly growth that is about two months for tight curl and closer to four for a loose wave. Budget a trim at eight weeks whichever one you pick.

Five mistakes that ruin a men's perm

• Going tighter than the photo. Curl always sets a shade tighter than it looks wet on the rod. If you are between two rod sizes, take the larger one every time.
• Washing it in the first 48 hours. The bonds are still settling. Shampoo in that window is the single most common reason a perm drops out in two weeks.
• Keeping your old haircut. Curl shrinks length by roughly a third. The cut that suited you straight is a different cut permed, which is why the barber should take less off, not the same.
• Brushing it. A brush separates the curl clump and you get frizz instead of definition. Fingers, or a wide tooth comb in the shower with conditioner in, and nothing else.
• Perming over fresh bleach. Two chemical processes inside two weeks is how hair breaks at the mid-shaft. The American Academy of Dermatology is blunt about stacking chemical services, and a strand test costs nothing.

If your hair is already curly and your problem is definition rather than curl, you do not need a perm at all. You need a cut built for curly hair and a product that matches your hair type.

See the curl on your own face before you book it

The free method works and you should try it first: find five reference photos of men with your hair color, your density and your face shape wearing the exact rod size you are considering, and take them to the consultation. Barbers are good at reading photos.

The wall it hits is that none of those photos are of you. A perm is a four month decision on a face you cannot preview, and hair that is straight today behaves differently to whoever is in the photo. That is the exact gap the try-on closes.
